Mercor vs Outlier: which AI training platform fits you?

Pay, getting in, payouts and country lists compared from each platform's own pages. Last checked October 28, 2026.

The short answer

  • Mercor posts a rate on every listing. On Oct 28, 2026 its Explore page showed a generalist listing at $40–$80 an hour and expert chemistry and engineering listings at $65–$75 per task. You apply listing by listing, often with an AI interview. [source] [source]
  • Outlier doesn't publish rates; you see the rate before each project. It needs at least an associate degree and pays weekly on Tuesdays through PayPal, Airtm or ACH bank transfer. [source]
  • The payout method may decide it for you: Mercor pays only to a bank account in your own name, through Stripe or Wise. It doesn't use PayPal. [source]

Pay: posted vs shown per project

Mercor lists a rate on each listing, hourly or per task. All contracts are in US dollars; outside the US, Stripe or Wise converts to your local currency when you're paid. [source] [source]

Outlier pays hourly or per task and shows the rate before each project. Any Outlier hourly figure you see on social media is one person's project, not a platform rate. [source]

Mercor listings open and close often. The rates above are what the Explore page showed on Oct 28, 2026; check the listing before you rely on a number.

Getting paid

  • Mercor on Stripe: standard payouts are free and reach your bank within up to 5 business days of release; instant payouts cost 1% and arrive in about 30 minutes where your bank supports them. [source]
  • Mercor on Wise: Wise emails you after each release and you must accept the transfer before money moves. Wise balances, tags and cards can't receive Mercor payouts. [source]
  • Outlier: PayPal, Airtm or ACH, processed weekly on Tuesdays. [source]

Only have PayPal? Outlier works; Mercor doesn't. Only have a local bank account? Both can work, depending on your country.

What workers say (anecdotal)

Individual Reddit posts, not data.

  • In an August 2026 thread, one worker on both says Mercor pays more in theory, but many people earn more on Outlier because its work is more consistent. [source]
  • Several Mercor workers describe well-organized projects and frequent communication from project managers. [source]
  • Project pauses and dry spells come up for both platforms. [source] [source]

Which should you try first?

  • You have a specialist background (medicine, law, chemistry, engineering, coding): browse Mercor's listings, which post the rate up front.
  • You have an associate degree or higher and want a steady queue to check: start Outlier's onboarding.
  • You can only receive PayPal: Outlier.
  • You're in Nigeria: Mercor's payment list includes you; Outlier's July 2026 list doesn't. You're in Cambodia: the reverse.
  • You're in Pakistan or Kenya: neither list includes you. Check our countries page.
