Outlier vs DataAnnotation: which AI training platform fits you?

Pay, entry tests and payouts compared from each platform's own pages. Last checked October 27, 2026.

The short answer

  • DataAnnotation publishes starting pay by track (from $25/hour for general projects) and lets you in through a single Starter Assessment. It pays only through PayPal, and you request payouts when you want them. [source]
  • Outlier doesn't publish rates, but it shows you the rate before each project. It needs at least an associate degree, verifies your identity and location, and pays weekly on Tuesdays through PayPal, AirTM or ACH bank transfer. [source]
  • Many people sign up for both, because work on either platform comes and goes.

Pay: what's published and what isn't

DataAnnotation is one of the few platforms that lists starting pay by track. Its FAQ gives general projects at $25–$50 an hour and coding at $40–$150+ an hour. Its home page lists generalist roles up to $50/hr and language specialists up to $40/hr. [source] [source]

Outlier doesn't publish a range. You see the rate on each project before you start. Any Outlier hourly figure you see on social media is one person's project, not a platform rate. [source]

Rates change: DataAnnotation's general starting rate read $20+ when we checked on Oct 18, 2026 and $25 on Oct 27, 2026. Check the FAQ before you rely on a number.

Getting in

DataAnnotation: choose a track (general, multilingual, coding, STEM or professional) and take that track's Starter Assessment. You can only take it once, so write carefully and review before you submit. [source]

Outlier: expect setup plus identity and location verification first, then each project's guidelines and an assessment before you can task on it. [source]

What workers say (anecdotal)

Individual Reddit posts, not data.

  • Several DataAnnotation workers prefer it for paid instruction reading and clearer project docs. [source]
  • One worker on both says Outlier has more support and community, while DataAnnotation has steadier work once you perform well. [source]
  • Long dry spells come up for both platforms. [source]

Which should you try first?

  • You write well and want published pay: start with DataAnnotation's general or multilingual assessment.
  • You code or have a STEM degree: take DataAnnotation's coding or STEM track, and apply to Outlier too, since its rate depends on your expertise.
  • You need a payout method other than PayPal: Outlier offers AirTM and ACH.
  • You're in Pakistan, Kenya or Nigeria: Outlier's July 2026 list doesn't include your country. Check our countries page.
