AI training jobs for writers
AI models write fluent text that can still miss the point, get the tone wrong or state things that aren't true. Spotting that takes a trained writer or editor, and several AI training platforms pay for it. Here's who's hiring writers, what each listing pays, and what they ask for. Every listing below was checked on November 3, 2026.

The short answer
- Writing work is listed right now at Alignerr, Mercor, DataAnnotation and Mindrift. Outlier doesn't publish rates; its FAQ says they vary by expertise, project and location. [source]
- Posted pay on November 3, 2026 ran from "up to $30" to $120 an hour (USD), depending on the listing. These are listed rates and ranges, not typical earnings.
- It isn't content writing. You judge, edit and rank AI-written text and write prompts and reference answers. Mindrift says plainly that you aren't writing articles or marketing copy for clients. [source]
- Work comes and goes. Mindrift's writing page said the domain was "quiet for now" when we checked, and Mercor's listing is a standing pool that matches you to projects as they open. [source][source]
Writing AI training roles listed now

Pay is what each listing showed on November 3, 2026. Listings open, close and change rate often, so check the listing before you count on a number. Ranges and "up to" figures aren't what most people earn. DataAnnotation's general projects cover more than writing, but its FAQ says they require strong writing.
What the work actually looks like
- Judging creative writing. Alignerr's Creative Writing Evaluators read AI-written fiction, poetry, essays and narrative nonfiction, score style, voice, coherence and originality, and flag clichés, flat characters and unnatural phrasing. [source]
- Writing prompts that test the model. Alignerr's Prompt Writers create questions and scenarios meant to challenge AI reasoning and creativity and to probe for safety issues, following a style guide. [source]
- Grading on craft. Mercor's creative pool grades model writing on whether "the prose earns its length," writes briefs and reference answers from work you've delivered, and flags output that's competent but wouldn't ship. [source]
- Editing and ranking. Mindrift's writing projects have you rate AI responses, edit them for grammar and clarity, rank versions and write reference-quality text, sometimes checking facts. [source]
How to qualify
- Credentials matter less than judgment. Alignerr says no publishing credits are required, and Mercor says a portfolio matters more than a credential. What they want is your ability to explain why one piece of writing works better than another. [source][source]
- Expect a writing test. Mindrift's writing assessment usually takes 1–2 hours and mirrors the real tasks. DataAnnotation's starter assessment can be taken only once, and most take about an hour. [source][source] More tips: How to get accepted on AI training platforms.
- Don't use AI to write your answers. These projects pay for human judgment. Treat any rule against AI tools in a listing or test as strict.
- Mercor starts with a short interview. You apply with a résumé, confirm where you work from, and take an AI interview of about 20 minutes in total. [source]
Tips
- Apply to more than one. Writing projects start and pause with client demand. Mercor says a match can come within a week or several months. [source]
- Check the time commitment. Alignerr's writing roles list 10–40 hours a week; Mindrift says most writing contributors put in 5–20 hours a week. [source][source]
- Specialists can earn more elsewhere. If you also have a law, finance, medicine or STEM background, those expert tracks usually post higher rates. Compare on our pay page.
- Know when you get paid. Mercor pays weekly through Stripe or Wise; Mindrift pays twice a month. For every platform, see When do AI training platforms pay? [source][source]

Can I do this outside the US?
Often, yes, but it varies by platform and project. Check our countries page for each platform.
Is it the same as the coding roles?
No. Coding roles judge whether AI-written code works. See AI training jobs for software engineers.
